Thamarai Selvi, a 23-year-old, and the wife of 28-year-old Pichandavar was reported to have removed the broken part of a syringe from her baby’s thigh.
The young mother delivered her baby on 9 March and had it vaccinated at the same hospital. The baby was vaccinated on the second day after her delivery. The mother and her child were discharged after the necessary newborn care and medical procedures had been concluded on March 14.

The Parents Blamed It On Medical Negligence
The mother of the newborn, Thamarai Selvi reported that she saw a shiny object bulging from her baby’s left thigh while going through the baby bath basics while giving her baby a bath. The parents did not take kindly to this and immediately reported the situation to the hospital where the child had been vaccinated. They alleged the occurrence was due to the negligence of the medical personnel at the hospital, Manapparai Headquarters Government Hospital.

When The Parents Noticed
The couple revealed they were confused as to why the baby repeatedly cried at home. A worry any parent would have if their kid continued crying incessantly despite following all the baby care tips they were aware of. Their initial guess was that it was a result of the irritation caused by the vaccine the baby had received. The mother, together with the child’s grandmother, visited the hospital for the second vaccine after 45 days.
At the hospital, the duo complained about the inflammation in the baby’s left thigh, but, the medical personnel paid no attention to them. At the hospital, they were simply advised to apply some ice pack on the swollen area, the child’s grandmother claims.
After several weeks of agony for the baby, and both desperation as well as ignorance of her ailments on the side of the parents, the young mother claimed she used her nails to remove a shiny object she noticed protruding from her baby’s left thigh. It was then she discovered it was a nearly 2cm portion of a syringe.

What Authorities Are Doing Concerning The Negligence In Newborn Care
After lodging a complaint with the chief medical officer-in-charge and the joint director of health, the issue is set to be addressed and severe measures taken against the person responsible for such gross negligence in newborn care and safety.
The child’s father, while reporting to media, said the child had been crying incessantly over the irritation for about 8 weeks. Most times unable to sleep. The father went on to lament on how they were unable to pacify the upset child due to their not knowing the cause of her problem. He revealed that the child went through an agonizing period despite their efforts in maintaining optimal newborn care and safety. After the needle had been removed, the parents feared it might have caused an infection after being in the child’s thigh for so long. The father revealed that due to this, and after consultations, they have decided to take the baby for a check-up at Tiruchy Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital.
At Tiruchy, Dr. S. Lakshmi, the Joint Director of Health, revealed that investigation was being made to get to the root of the situation as the baby had been vaccinated in two places. The assured the media that severe action will be taken against the person who erred. Although no infection was found due to the needle, the parents have been referred to MGMGH for further checks to reassure them of the stability of their child’s health.
