Jim Flahive, a swim instructor at Swim Safe School in Orange, CA, states that the main question asked is when can a baby start learning to swim. At the age of 5 or 6 months, Jim tells us, baby’s are able to learn to survive in the water. They are all about being safe in the water and in this case, all about baby being safe in the water.
Jim talks about how children go through different stages and with those stages there can be swim learning stages as well. A child starts crawling, then cruising and finally walking. It’s the same with swimming. They help the child get accustomed to the water and teach them basic survival and go from there.
Teach Baby to Survive Water
Since it’s all about baby safety, one of the things they work on with the infant is how to flip onto their back and learn to float. Jim tells us it’s a safety measure to ensure that if a child does get in a pool unnoticed they will be able to at least float until someone came to their rescue. Children are smart and if given direction can quickly pick things up, including how to save their life in the water.
