The Sun reported that B&M has closed down the necessary baby products aisle due to the Coronavirus pandemic that has recently taken the world by storm. They claim that the products are not a necessity. It is not news that the government of the United Kingdom (like the majority of governments in the world are doing) has issued an order for stores and retailers to only sell essentials, and B&M seemed to have made its decision all about baby stuff. The result? Baby products aren’t essential. There is a well-labeled signed attached to a tape that prevents people from shopping in the baby products aisle, which parents argue is all about baby essentials. The sign, as captured by one angry customer, explains why the aisle has been closed down.

Parents Will Have None Of It

The importance of keeping to the government’s regulations of only dealing with essential products at this time cannot be overemphasized. The store was purportedly acting according to the rules, and in so doing protecting the people from unnecessary procurements. However, parents will have none of it, for them, it is all about baby care. The essential baby items section includes Aptamil milk along with other baby foods and shampoo. Parents are strongly objecting the company’s decision, arguing that these products are essentials. Mothers have been going through hell trying to get their hands on diapers and baby formula.

Why? Those who were purchasing in bulk cleared the shelves before the announcement of the lockdown. Parents have been ranting on Facebook and other social media, sharing pictures and expressing their discontent at why anyone would claim baby items aren’t essential. The frustration these parents are going through right now is unimaginable. One parent made a post on Facebook asking how baby items could be labeled as unnecessary and expressed that they thought it was ridiculous. They stated the section is all about baby essentials and nothing on it isn’t needed. The post was shared hundreds of times by similarly aggrieved parents who have been going through the same challenge.

B&M’s Reaction

The discount store B&M has since rectified this and apologized for the misunderstanding. However, this did not stop the angry parents from lashing out at the store. The store also clarified that the situation was an isolated incident in only one store. The products are now available.  But from the reactions of these parents, if the store hadn’t reopened the baby products section there is a chance someone might rip off the tape and grab some baby supplies. For parents, it’s all about baby care and needs. One parent even suggested it was a distinct possibility on Facebook.
