Unfortunately, babies deal with infections and other ailments just as adults do. It’s important to know baby health symptoms for infections and in this case a blocked tear duct that’s possibly infected. Being in tune with your infant so you know when something is not right is very helpful in catching things early on.
Infection or no Infection
When something is infected it generally needs antibiotics, and catching it early as possible is always better. Mom noticed a yellowish-green sticky eye on her baby and wisely took him to get help. First, it is a blocked tear duct and needs to be gently cleaned out, but further steps may need to be taken to ensure no infection.
With clean hands, one needs to take a saline wipe and gently wipe the infant’s eye starting from the inside corner. Always use a new wipe so as not to spread infection. If no saline wipes are available, clean rags or sterile cloth with plain boiled water that has been cooled down for the infant will work. Baby health symptoms are not always the same, so if in doubt, always err on the side of safety.
